Bassists must have excellent reading skills and the versatility to perform rock, pop, jazz, funk, Latin, and more. Proficiency in note-head reading is necessary, as well as interpreting chord charts and lead sheets. A jazz vocabulary, driving grooves for rock and pop, and a deep pocket for Motown and funk are all crucial. Gig experience and a wide repertoire? Even better. Upright skills are a plus. If you like playing along to Tower of Power records in between Christian McBride tracks, this gig’s probably for you.
