Keyboardists must be excellent readers, strong improvisers, and comp over everything from ‘80s pop to big band jazz. Proficiency in note-head reading on grand staff is necessary, as well as interpreting chord charts and lead sheets. A jazz vocabulary, comfortability with blues and pop, and understanding of various styles is crucial for both soloing and accompaniment. Gig experience and a wide repertoire? Even better.
